DHH Abandons Manual Coding After 25 Years

At Rails World 2026, Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson admitted he hasn’t written code by hand since March 2026 — despite having been skeptical of generative AI’s promise just a year earlier. “I’m surprised there’s a programming language I like more than Ruby,” he told the audience. “It’s called English.”

Hansson declared that manual coding has lost economic viability for the vast majority of developers and predicted this will become reality for nearly all commercial development by year’s end. He characterized the shift as the most significant event in the history of computing, with engineers transitioning from coders to product builders directing autonomous AI systems. He also forecast a fundamental rethink of software architecture: traditional abstraction layers lose value when AI agents write the code, and the industry has yet to define new design patterns for this paradigm.
