Amodei, Altman, and Musk Simultaneously Call for Slowing the AI Race
In a rare convergence, the three most prominent figures in the American AI race have within days of each other called for decelerating frontier model development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged slowing down so that safety and governance can keep pace with model capabilities. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported independent safety evaluation and coordination mechanisms, while Elon Musk publicly agreed with the general direction. The core problem remains: no single company can slow down if competitors accelerate. Without global coordination, any unilateral U.S. pause becomes a strategic risk, particularly given China’s parallel AI programs.
