EU Designates ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Platform Under DSA
The European Commission has designated ChatGPT as a “very large online platform” (VLOP) under the EU’s Digital Services Act, after the chatbot’s monthly audience in the EU surpassed 45 million active users. The status automatically subjects the product to the DSA’s strictest requirements, with OpenAI given four months to adapt. The company will then have to report on how its models handle disinformation, deepfakes, bias, and hallucinations, undergo annual independent audits, promptly block illegal content, and grant regulators expanded access to internal data. Violations of the DSA can result in fines of up to 6% of global turnover.
