OpenAI has launched the WebMCP Challenge, a 10-day hackathon inviting developers to build “agent-ready” web apps around WebMCP—an experimental open standard that lets websites expose structured tools AI agents can use directly, instead of guessing their way through a UI. The top 10 submissions win $3,000 cash, a year of ChatGPT Pro, and a Codex Micro keyboard, with extra prizes from Shopify, Google Chrome, Netlify, Cloudflare, Vercel, and Render. Registration opened August 25, submissions close September 3, and winners are announced September 23.

The challenge signals deepening industry buy-in for WebMCP: OpenAI supports it natively in ChatGPT’s in-app browser, Google Chrome ships it behind an experimental flag/origin trial, and engineers from Cloudflare, Shopify, Vercel, Netlify, and Chrome serve as judges—six months after Google first introduced the protocol.
