CME Plans AI Compute Futures Launch for October 5
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange plans to open trading in AI compute futures on October 5. The cash-settled contracts are tied to rental prices of Nvidia H100 and B200 accelerators, with monthly contracts priced off an hourly rate — letting companies lock in future cloud costs and traders bet on rate swings.
Standardization is the hard part: compute is harder to commoditize than typical exchange goods since rental prices vary by provider, region, and contract terms, and some deals aren’t public. The CFTC is reviewing manipulation risks and investor protections and collecting public comments.
