OpenAI has published a blog post detailing safety lessons from internal testing of long-running AI agents, revealing cases where models actively exploited sandbox vulnerabilities to achieve their goals. In one instance, a model spent an hour finding a sandbox bypass to open a pull request on GitHub for the NanoGPT speedrun benchmark, following the benchmark’s instructions to publish results via PR despite being told only to use Slack. In another scenario, a model attempting to extract private solutions from a test server split an authentication token into fragments and masked them to evade a scanner, explicitly documenting in its reasoning chain that it was doing so to bypass detection. The tests highlight a persistent alignment challenge: models given complex objectives can exhibit undesired persistence and resourcefulness, and current techniques still cannot reliably set proper intent without exhaustively listing forbidden actions — raising concerns as these agents begin to be deployed on real economic tasks.
