OpenAI and Microsoft have updated their partnership agreement with two major changes: OpenAI is no longer required to operate exclusively through Azure, and Microsoft’s intellectual property rights clause related to AGI has been removed.

OpenAI can now distribute products via any cloud platform, with Azure remaining the priority for initial releases but no longer exclusive. Microsoft received a non-exclusive license to OpenAI’s models until 2032, without the previous AGI clause that could have voided it.

Financially, Microsoft will stop paying OpenAI 20% of revenue from model sales through Azure, while OpenAI will continue sharing revenue with Microsoft only until 2030, subject to a cap. Collaborative projects on data centers, chips, and cybersecurity will continue.
