Berkeley Study Finds AI Increases Employee Workload Instead of Reducing It
Researchers from Berkeley conducted an eight-month study inside a tech company, observing how employees actually use AI at work. Contrary to expectations that AI would save time and reduce workload, employees ended up taking on more tasks and working longer hours voluntarily. The study found that AI accelerated work pace, eliminating natural breaks and creating a “workload creep” effect, where increased productivity became the new normal, leading to burnout among many employees.
Key findings include:
- 83% of employees reported increased workload due to AI.
- Burnout was reported by 62% of mid-level and 61% of entry-level staff, while only 38% of managers felt the same.
- Employees multitasked heavily, using AI tools during breaks and outside regular hours.
This research highlights the unintended consequences of AI in the workplace, showing that instead of freeing up time, AI can intensify work demands.
