Multiclass Classification: A Brief Introduction
In this post, I will explain what multiclass classification is and how it can be used to solve various problems. Multiclass classification is a type of supervised machine learning technique that aims to predict the class label of an observation from a set of possible classes.
Example - Penguin Species Classification
Suppose we have some data about penguins, and we want to classify them into one of three species: Adelie, Gentoo, or Chinstrap. The data includes the flipper length of each penguin, which we can use as a feature to train our model.
To train a multiclass classification model, we need to use an algorithm that can calculate the probability of each class for a given observation. There are two kinds of algorithms we can use:
- One-vs-Rest (OvR) algorithms: These algorithms train a binary classifier for each class, and then compare the probabilities of each classifier to make a prediction.
- Multinomial algorithms: These algorithms train a single classifier that outputs a vector of probabilities for all classes, and then select the class with the highest probability to make a prediction.
Evaluating a Multiclass Classification Model
To evaluate how well our model performs, we can use various metrics that measure the accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score of our predictions. These metrics can be calculated for each individual class, or aggregated across all classes.
We can also use a confusion matrix to visualize the number of correct and incorrect predictions for each class. A confusion matrix is a table that shows the predicted and actual class labels for each observation.
